It’s official; Minecraft 1.3 finally has a release date. The new update will be coming on August 1st, 2012.
The new update brings several changes to the base game system, most of which fix bugs and issues that slowed down gameplay in multiplayer. However, there are some exciting new features coming as well, including new types of building materials like emerald and emerald ore, a new trading system, and the capability to write in books that other people can then read. This is bound to start a brand new wave of in-game Minecraft fan-fiction.
Most importantly, Single-Player is now no longer its own mode. Now it’s just a shell on top of the already existing multiplayer framework. On the upside, this allows you to share your single-player works with friends who are on the same network as you, and it allows you to use multi-player interface commands in single-player mode. However, on the downside this actually increases the game’s requirements making it slightly more resource-heavy. In addition, certain bugs, like the recurring “black terrain” bug, have been pushed back to Minecraft 1.4
