Raise your glass in a toast to one of the longest living consoles of all time. The PlayStation 2 is finally dead. Worldwide production of the console has ceased after almost 13 years. It almost survived into the PlayStation 4 generation. Sony has confirmed in a statement to The Guardian that the console will no longer be manufactured in any territory, following the recent news of its discontinuation in Japan.
The PlayStation 2 has sold over a hundred and fifty million units worldwide. It boasts a library of over 10,000 games and has 1.52 billion individual games since its launch. The PS2 was one of the first consoles that let you play DVDs. It was one of the first consoles to be more than just a game box, pushing us toward the state of the industry today where all consoles are mini-computers or live assistant machines that can go on Facebook and Netflix just as easily as they can play Call of Duty.
Farewell, PS2. You will be missed. You will especially be missed by anyone who doesn’t have a backwards compatible PS3. Cheers!
