News came out of Los Angeles last night that Square Enix’s LA studio was undergoing layoffs. Today, anonymous sources, allegedly from among those cut, have asserted that those layoffs are very real and include half of the office’s marketing team (about ten people). There are also about seven people in public relations are to be kept on until late June, but only three or four will remain beyond that.
Additionally, a source is claiming that “close to around 20” were released from the accounting, IT, and events departments, while community and support have lost between five and ten.
Perhaps the most telling part of the situation, though, is the assertion that Mike Fischer, the president and CEO of Square Enix America, is to be let go in May, with the head of marketing following immediately after E3.
Further claims indicate that these layoffs are not limited to the Los Angeles office, and will be accompanied by similar cuts in both Europe and Japan.
