Now that Peter Molyneux is no longer with Lionhead, the company seems to have had something of an identity crisis. Fable Heroes and Fable: The Journey both took the franchise’s most distinctive feature—freedom to act as one wishes—and pared it down to a few, token choices. According to some new job listings, their identity quest continues.
Specifically, Lionhead is looking for an animation director and a core engine programmer, both of whom will hopefully have familiarity with Unreal Engine 3 and/or Unreal Engine 4. Though the title they’d be working on is unannounced, they’re seeking developers with experience on large scale RPGs, Action Adventure titles, and RTS games. More to the point, they want someone with “background working on new franchises or reimaginings of existing franchises.”
That points not to a new IP, but to an existing one being retooled. The most obvious candidate for this is Fable, in which case Fable 4 would likely be a tremendous departure from past games in the core series. Better? Worse? We won’t know until Lionhead comes clean on what they’re planning.
