When we last saw a trailer for Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo's upcoming co-op Mario platformer, it was full of crazy scenes in which Mario did things we'd never seen him pull off before. A newly released trailer takes things a bit more slowly, explaining some of Mario's new powers and detailing the game's online features.
The trailer first visually confirms that players can choose to play as any of the four characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad, even in single-player mode. Mario is an all-rounder, Luigi has a high jump, Peach can hover in the air, and Toad can run fast. Players can also choose from these characters in up to four-player co-op, although co-op gameplay is local only.
Some of the new power-ups seen in the previous trailer are also explained. We've already seen the cat power-up a fair bit, but the trailer reminds us that Cat Mario can climb walls, scratch enemies, and even leap on them for a sneaky kill. When Mario finds a cherry, he turns into Double Mario, creating a clone of himself. For every cherry found, a new clone is created, allowing for a small horde of Marios to explore some levels. In addition, Fire Mario, Tanooki Mario, Boomerang Mario, Mega Mario, and the gamer-shaming invincible White Tanooki Mario (optionally provided if a player dies too many times in a row) are confirmed to be returning power-ups. Although the power-ups are named after Mario, they can be used by any of the playable characters.
Rather than providing online co-op play, the game's online features are of the quirky Nintendo variety. Players who take the game online can view other players' ghost data, following behind “ghost Miis” of those players in hopes of learning new tricks or finding secret areas. Just as in New Super Mario Bros. U, players can also post to the Miiverse directly from the game, offering comments or tips about its levels to other players. This time, there are Mario-themed stamps hidden in each level, and players can decorate their in-game Miiverse posts with any of the stamps they've found.
