Nintendo Starting to Ban Switch Hackers from Online Services

Over the past few months, the homebrew and hacking scene surrounding the Nintendo Switch has made a lot of progress. This includes some whistleblowing over an enormous, ostensibly unpatchable exploit. While how that gets addressed will remain to be seen (likely in later shipments), we have started to see evidence of Nintendo finding some hackers, including one of online prominence, and banning them from accessing services such as the eShop.

The person in question is Shiny Quagsire, who has been pretty active in the Switch hacking scene. They showed a strange error message, indicating a ban from Nintendo’s online services. The weird part is, this happened on a non-hacked Switch, leading many to the conclusion that Nintendo is picking up on error messages being reported from “libnx,” which was used to ban either the user account or IP address.

This ban knocks out eShop, online play, friends, and posting. The news app and updates reportedly still function, but anything else (including digitally-purchased games) won’t. So folks messing around with this stuff should be aware that there’s a good chance this can happen, and ostensibly it may even take out a second, non-hacked device.
