Sony Hasn't Written Off Future Handhelds

With the PS Vita’s relative lack of success and Sony’s announcement that it would slowly be dropping support for the system by discontinuing PlayStation Plus titles and physical releases, it wasn’t clear what Sony’s future in the realm of handhelds would look like. John Kodera, a new boss at PlayStation, has said that Sony is looking into options.

Kodera said that it wasn’t time to “discuss specific hardware plans.” He also said that, “rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable.”

That last quote evokes the Nintendo Switch in my mind. Nintendo has found success in blurring the lines between console and handheld and Sony had filed a patent last year for something that is reminiscent of the Switch. The former PlayStation boss had said that the market for such a device would be limited but with a new boss, new possibilities open up.
