Steam to Restrict Achievements to Fight ‘Fake Games’

According to a report from Polygon, Valve has notified developers that some games on Steam will have a restriction placed on the number of achievements they can have, up to 100. Other constraints could also come to the achievement system as well. This move is meant to take aim at what the company refers to as “fake games.”

According to Valve, the number of accounts and games affected are “insignificant,” and that the policy solely refers to users inflating their achievements and “game counts” to abuse some of Steam’s systems. This also applies to the Trading Card system, which Valve is also taking measures to regulate. This is tied to a “confidence metric,” which was introduced last year. For games hit with the achievement limit, those achievements also won’t be visible in a user’s showcase, and they won’t be counted in the global count either.

Valve stated that while these games inflating numbers were small, there has still been an impact on Steam’s userbase and algorithms. Oddly, this news follows Valve releasing statements that it’s stepping away from moderating the content in games, save for illegal or “troll” content.
