Bethesda Officially Unveils DOOM Eternal

After announcing the game at E3 2018 with a brief trailer, Bethesda rolled out the red carpet for DOOM Eternal at QuakeCon 2018. Loosely based on the original DOOM II, we see the game takes the original “Hell on Earth” concept of the classic sequel and expands on it with new weapons, enemies, mechanics, and locations full of demons to mercilessly slaughter.

Even the Doomslayer himself has a new design for DOOM Eternal. He’s bigger, bulkier, and murderer-ier. He has a retractable blade on his arm, for extra stabbing, and what appears to be a shoulder-mounted flamethrower-type gimmick as well. In addition to the extra kit on his person, there’s plenty of new weapons as well, and a major attachment to the classic shotgun called the Meathook, which is a grappling device that yanks the player towards enemies.

Doomslayer also has some new physical abilities, the most obvious of which is a quick dash, that seems to be omnidirectional, as we even see it used in mid-air during one of several gameplay demonstrations. Speaking of physicality, there’s also a new damage mechanic for demons, internally labeled “destructible demons.” Enemies deteriorate as they take damage, and it looks appropriately gross.

In terms of story, there’s a multiplayer component in which players can control demons and invade other players’ games (which of course can be toggled). Also, there’s a new enemy called The Marauder, that bears an odd resemblance to the Doomslayer.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but what I can say now is that DOOM Eternal looks packed, and id Software is on quite a roll.
