Here's Why the Switch's Pokemon Excludes Some Characters
Pokemon Sword & Shield

There was quite a bit of controversy about Pokemon Sword and Shield at E3 2019. While people were excited about the next installment in the series, it came with a bit of heartbreak. It was confirmed that the new installment will only have a Galar Dex, so named for the new region. However, this poses problems for people who might want to use the Pokemon Home app to bring older Pokemon to the game, as no National Dex means only Pokemon appearing in that game can be imported in. Now, even more details about the reasoning have appeared.

Game Freak Producer Junichi Masuda recently addressed the issue of missing Pokemon in Famitsu. In it, he pointed out that the number of Pokemon available overall will be over 1,000 after Pokemon Sword and Shield is released. He then said, “As a result, it has become extremely difficult to make Pokemon with a new personality play an active part and to balance their compatibility.” For the sake of balancing, keeping certain characters in the spotlight, and making sure things stay relevant, it isn’t feasible to have everyone in, according to him.

Masuda did mention that he wished it was different. This is more a quality over quantity concern. Later in the interview, he even said, “I wanted to be able to bring all Pokémon if I could do it, but it was also a decision that I had to make some day.” So while it would have been great to see all of the old favorites coming back, it seems like perhaps it wouldn’t be a viable option for the first mainline installment in the series on the Nintendo Switch.]

Pokemon Sword and Shield will come to the Nintendo Switch worldwide on November 15, 2019.
