While some companies like to take an open stance on modding, there are others who tend to close their doors. Bethesda has been making efforts (with some backlash) to fold modding communities into official mods for their games. Valve makes options available through Steam for the modding community as well. As we found out yesterday though, one other big name is fighting against mods. Take Two Interactive has recently taken a harsh stance against modding by sending a cease and desist to one of the largest modding software creators for Grand Theft Auto . OpenIV listed themselves as the ultimate modding tool for GTA V , GTA IV , and Max Payne 3. Unfortunately, they are no more now.
The creators behind the modding software said they took their decision very seriously and had to take the fall. Had they gone to court with Take Two, they could have potentially proven that mods fall under fair use, but that would have taken time and money. That’s really all that separates the big names from the little ones. If they did win, they wouldn’t recoup any of those costs and especially not the time taken. These are the reason why they have decided to shut their doors.
The Internet is in an uproar and asking Rockstar Games to step in, but at this point there probably isn’t much hope. You had a great run OpenIV, and we’re sad to see you go.
