Battleborn Development Ends

Battleborn Development Ends

One of the bigger high-profile bombs in gaming’s current generation has been Gearbox’s Battleborn . It infamously went toe-to-toe with Overwatch, intentionally or otherwise, and fell pretty hard. Then it went sort-of free to play. Now it’s done when it comes to new content.

Gearbox is moving on from Battleborn , officially. The game’s director, Randy Varnell, said as much in an open letter to the Battleborn community. The game is not dead, but it has entered what is known as “maintenance mode.” Essentially, no new content is coming to the game ever, and only the bare minimum staff is on board to keep the servers running and address any big bugs that appear down the line.

The world of “hero shooters” has ballooned to quite a size in recent years, but immediately stabilized with Overwatch ’s massive success. A few more games managed to squeeze in and do well, but the genre is so crowded at this point, it’s difficult for anything new to compete. Look no further than the tragic story of LawBreakers for a hard example.
