Riot Reveals League of Legends Crates’ Drop Rates

Riot Reveals League of Legends Crates’ Drop Rates

As a side effect of new laws introduced in China last year, compounded by all the heat on publishers for leaning on loot boxes, more and more companies are disclosing their drop rates for randomized content, even in North America. The latest to do so is League of Legends developer Riot Games, which has disclosed both the contents and drop rates for the game’s Hextech Chests.

If you don’t know what the hell a Hextech Chest is, here’s a brief rundown. The League of Legends store is how a player can purchase new content, such as permanent Champions (the free ones rotate), or new skins. Through Hextech Chests, you can get shards that can be cashed in for that content for less real money. Chests can also be earned for free by obtaining S rank on specific characters during a season.

Riot’s support page now lists what can come in a Hextech Chest, what the percentage of those individual items dropping is, and various special rules that also apply. For example, there’s a Bad Luck Protection that prevents players from never seeing a skin drop, which artificially increases their drop rate. Masterwork Chests, to be implemented in patch 8.7, are also detailed in similar fashion.
