Due to a legal battle due to rights associated with the Friday the 13th film franchise, the developers of Friday the 13th: The Video Game have to cease adding additional content. While the team originally thought they were within their rights to continue working on the game, things seem to have shifted dramatically as the case has progressed.
Victor Miller, screenwriter of the first movie in the series, has been fighting a battle over the rights to the series. He created the concepts and characters that launched the franchise and is looking to terminate a grant of rights and gain ownership of the IP. Meanwhile, the current rights holders are arguing his work was for-hire, negating his ownership claim. As this goes on, no new films can be produced.
Gun Media released a statement, which says the team has been attempting to support the game within the legal restraints of the lawsuit. Now, it has become clear to the team that new content, including modes, characters, and maps, is not legally possible. That said, the game can still be maintained, which includes plans to introduce dedicated servers.
